Why does a hummingbird have a long skinny beak while a finch has a short, strong one? And how does a bird’s beak help determine what it eats?
In this Farm School kit, kids will turn a real pumpkin into a working backyard bird feeder and then use it as their own little bird-watching station!
But first, we’re diving into bird science. Kids will investigate different types of beaks, learn how a bird’s body is designed for the way it eats and lives, and take on a hands-on Beak Challenge to see which pretend “beaks” work best for different types of food.
We’ll investigate the seeds in our bird food, make predictions about which birds might visit, and learn about the important jobs birds have on a farm and in our ecosystem.
Once the feeder is outside, the learning keeps going! Kids can watch for visitors, record what they see, notice how different birds use their beaks and discover which foods their backyard birds prefer.
Recommended for ages 7–14. Younger children can participate with adult help.
