Have you ever stopped to look REALLY closely at a spider web? There’s a lot more going on than a bunch of sticky string!
In this Farm School kit, kids will investigate how spiders build their webs and then use what they learn to weave their own. They’ll start with real sticks, learn a simple lashing technique to secure them together, then weave string around the branches to create their own spider web.
Along the way, we’ll learn how spiders make silk, what spinnerets are, why some parts of a web are sticky while others aren’t, and how a spider can tell when something has landed in its web without even seeing it.
We’ll also take a closer look at orb webs and the amazing way spiders build them, from the strong support lines to the spiral that works its way around the web.
This kit combines nature study, spider science, engineering and two useful hands-on skills: basic lashing and weaving.
Recommended for ages 7–14. Younger children can participate with adult help.
Your kit includes the sticks, string and supplies needed to create your woven spider web, along with hands-on activities and printed learning materials.
