What could an ancient Egyptian mummy possibly have in common with a jar of food sitting in your pantry? More than you might think!
In this Farm School kit, we’re traveling back to ancient Egypt to investigate the science behind mummification. Kids will start an experiment and watch what happens over several days. We’ll discover what causes things to decay, why removing moisture can slow that process and how ancient Egyptians used those same ideas thousands of years ago.
Then we’ll bring that science back to the farm! Kids will discover why people have always needed ways to make things last and explore how drying, salting, fermenting, canning and cold storage help us preserve the harvest today.
For our main project, kids will create their own Egyptian-inspired burial mask using papier-mâché, then learn about the meaning and purpose behind the incredible masks found in ancient Egyptian tombs.
It’s Ancient Egypt, art, history, biology and preservation science all rolled into one very October-y Farm School kit!
Recommended for ages 7–14. Younger children can participate with adult help.
Your kit includes supplies for the experiment, a mask form and papier-mâché supplies for your Egyptian burial mask, hands-on activities and printed learning materials.
